The Middle East's Disappearing Hellenes

Mon 27 October 2008 - 19:15

A talk in English by writer, photographer and television producer, Iason Athanasiadis. From the glory days of the 19th and early 20th century when a Greek cultural and commercial bourgeoisie spanned the urban hubs of North Africa, the Levant, the Persian Gulf and up into Central Asia, Greek communities have declined to almost extinction.  The lives of three very different Greeks (Olga Xanthopoulou, Thanassis Lerounis and Carlos Mavroleon), each one representative of a current trend, highlight where Greeks stand in the region today. This talk will be illustrated by personal photographs from Iran and Pakistan.  The venue is the Hellenic Centre.  Free entry but please confirm attendance on 020 7563 9835 or press@helleniccentre.org
